2002 Ford Econoline GRDP6 Guardian - Use the instructions that were included with the original Guardian or Guardian II kit, and make the following modifications: VEHICLE 1 HARNESS – 1997-2002 Econoline with Gas Engine and Transmission Code E or 9 only – This application will not have a Ford OEM Blunt cut wire for “Park”. An auxiliary 4-pin Park Harness (Part # GRDP6) will be needed and the Vehicle 1 Harness will need to be modified. Cut the Orange wire on the Vehicle 1 harness near the connector.

Save the grommet, and discard the Orange wire. Locate the Ford gray 4-pin connector located above the transmission bell housing. Separate the connector halves and connect the gray “T” harness connectors from the GRDP6 Harness between them. Drill a 5/8″ hole in the bulkhead flange for the engine cover (see picture). Feed the two green wires through the hole from the engine compartment. Slide the saved grommet onto the harness and secure in the hole. The grommet can be moved along the harness for a custom fit. Install the two Green wire terminals into the Vehicle 1 Harness connector in the two empty slots next to where the orange wire was. Either Green wire can be installed in either slot.

Ensure that the metal pins securely lock into the 6-pin connector. Secure the harness with wire ties. This application will also have a 1-pin connector at the parking brake. The stock kit has a 2-pin parking brake connector and will need the following modification. Cut the brown wire in the stock harness about 1 inch above the “T” area. Discard the 2-pin connector. Strip the insulation on the brown wire and solder to the 1-pin park brake adapter brown wire. Use the provided heat shrink tubing to seal the connection.

Do not use a butt connector! Disconnect the black, single-wire Ford connector from the Parking Brake. Plug the female side of the connector from the adapter to the parking brake. Install the male side of the connector on the adapter to the female connector in the Ford harness. Snap the Vehicle 1 Harness into the Guardian or Guardian II Module connector labeled “Vehicle 1″.

Undercover Tonneaus are designed from trucks that do not have a bed liner (spray-in bed liners pose no problem). Trucks that do have under-the-rail or over-the-rail bed liners will require some minor trimming of the bed liner to ensure proper placement of the mounting brackets. Due to the wide variety of bed liner manufacturers, the modifications will vary slightly between different brands. Any modifications must be made to the bed liner and NOT to the Undercover mounting hardware. Modifications to the mounting hardware will result in improper installation and will void your warranty.

TONNEAU INSTALLATION GUIDE Place the rear bracket against the truck stake pocket or tail light well Page 4, Figure 1, Pictures A & B. Use two of the holes in rear bracket which are unobstructed by the truck bed, (there will be three to choose from), one hole as far forward as possible and one hole as far back as possible (this will vary depending upon truck model) Page 4, Figure 2. Place a 5/16Óx 1 1/4″bolt with a 5/16″lock washer and a 5/16″washer through the hole in bracket Page 4, Figure 3. Place clamp on backside of bracket behind the bed lip of the truck.

Thread the bold into the clamp and tighten being careful to not let the clamp twist while tightening. Make sure bracket is held down tightly against truck bed rail before tightening. Repeat procedure for second clamp. Mounting bracket bolts must be tightened down without bending the bracket. Keep the clamps straight and do not let them turn while tightening Page 4, Figure 3, Picture C & D.

WARNING! Bolts must be tightened to the correct torque to prevent any movement of the bracket on the truck bed. Bolts must be re-checked for tightness periodically. Failure to do so could cause serious damage to both the truck and/or your Undercover. Repeat Steps A through C for opposite side of the truck bed.   • 1. Install the 4 springs in the 4 chamfered holes. 
  • 2. Install thrust washer behind locking side gear. 
  • 3. Remove the small cap, locking ring, locking gear and the following parts shown-set screw, dowel pin, shaft, spider gear (on opened end) spider gear washer, spider gear cap and snap ring.
  • 4. Your carrier should now look like this-open on one side with the shaft and spider gear missing. This will enable you to install your axles and c-clip later through these procedures. 
  • 5 Install locking side gear with gears facing engagement with spider gears. 
  • 6. Slide the ring gear around the carrier. 
  • 7. Install locking ring gear with gears facing engagement with locking side gear.
  • 8. The flat side must be facing up! Push locking ring down and let the springs return it to ensure smooth operation (repeat several times). 
  • 9. Install small carrier cap -align holes, make sure it slides into locking side gear smoothly.

  • 1. Remove tires, brakes, rotors, and axles in accordance with your vehicle’s manufacturer’s service manual (MSM). Drain oil then remove carrier. Now is a good time to check seals and clean entire housing. 
  • 2. Install your bearings and shims in accordance with your MSM. Note: installation kit not included -bearings, shims, etc. 
  • 3. Check your pattern in accordance with your MSM. Note: gear set up should be done by a certified mechanic. 
  • 4. Rotate the carrier with opened end facing out so that you can install the c-clips. 
  • 5. Push axles in and install the c-clips, once this is done pull axles out some until they are properly in place.
  • 6. Carefully Install the shaft. The end with the cross hole should be on this end. With the cross hole running north/south and the shaft not be pushed all the way through. 


Leave some extending out this end to enable you to install the spider gear, cap, dowel pin, and set screw.

  • Install the exhaust system so it will maintain a minimum distance of 50mm(2″) from any flammable or heat sensitive material. 
  • Ensure that the fuel system is intact and there are no leaks. Asphyxiation Hazard 
  • Route the heater exhaust so that exhaust fumes cannot enter any passenger compartments. 
  • If running exhaust components through an enclosed compartment, ensure that it is vented to the outside.


Safety Hazard on Coolant Heaters Used With Improper Antifreeze Mixtures 


  • The proper operation of the Espar coolant heaters requires that the coolant in the system to be heated contain a proper mixture of water and antifreeze to prevent coolant from freezing or slushing. 
  • If the coolant becomes slushy or frozen, the heater’s coolant pump cannot move the coolant properly causing a blockage of the circulating system. Once this occurs, pressure willbuild up rapidly in the heater and the coolant hose could either burst or blow off at the connection point to the heater. 
  • This situation could cause engine damage and/or personal i n j u r y. Extreme care should betaken to ensure a proper mixture of water and antifreeze is used in the coolant system. 
  • Refer to the engine manufacturer’s or coolant manufacturer’s recommendations for your specific requirements.


Note: During electrical welding work on the vehicle disconnect the power to the heater in order to protect the control unit. Note: The heater is equipped with a high voltage cutout as well a low voltage cutout.

It’s assumed that base engine will remain a 3,5 – liter V – 6 which can deliver 288 hp and 254 lb – ft of torque. There will be a couple of Eco Boost engine for the remainder of the lineup. A 3,5 – liter EcoBoost V – 6 will produce 365 hp and 350 lb – ft of torque and smaller one 2,0 – liter EcoBoost I – 4 engine will crack out 240 hp and 270 lb – ft of torque. However, the 2,3 – liter EcoBoost engine from the new Mustang could replace the V – 6, while the EcoBoosted engine from the SHO will probably remain unchanged.

At this moment the most efficient engine in Taurus lineup is 2,0 – liter Eco Boost engine, rated at 26 mpg combined, while the V – 6 engines are currently rated at 20 and 23 mpg combined.
